Dear Helen Ward:

Thank you for reaching out with your questions about child care in the context of COVID-19. The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) continues to work to support parents, child care providers, and early childhood educators during these unprecedented times.

MCFD has a frequently asked questions (Q&A) document on www.gov.bc.ca/MCFD-COVID. The Q&A is updated regularly and contains information for parents, early childhood educators and providers on child care programs during the pandemic.

You can access the Q&A directly by visiting: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/family-and-social-supports/covid-19/qa_child_care_sector.pdf

The Q&A also includes information on recently announced instructions to child care providers to prioritize placements for children whose parents work directly in public health, health services, social services, law enforcement, first responders and emergency response. This means that providers must prioritize families working in the essential services fields listed above, then prioritize families working in the rest of the essential services list. For a complete list, please see the https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/family-and-social-supports/covid-19/list_of_essential_services.pdf document.

We are committed to keeping you informed on our response efforts as the situation continues to evolve. Please visit the Web site often to access information on child care program and links to other important information.

Sincerely,

Katrina Chen

Minister of State for Child Care
