This video teaches nurses the steps BC CDC says are needed to assess that a minor is “mature” and can consent to health care treatment without parental consent.


NOTES:

  • The process depicted in the video is never or rarely done.
  • There is no info about assessing minors younger or older than grade 9.
  • Only “standard information” is to be given.
  • No information about legal processes are given.
  • The nurse only gives her first name and nothing to identify her later if needed.
  • The minor is not given written info to take home.
  • No objective tests are given or documented (e.g., IQ test, test of the info given).
  • The minor is assumed to know his medical history accurately.
